i386 d-i image for Sarge, with kernel 2.6.18 (early test release)

Last week Pascal, who is a friend of bubulle, asked me how he could make ISO image with kernel 2.6.18 for Sarge.

Timely I'd like to have a kernel 2.6.18 image for myself also (I bought Core2Duo machine. It has VIA VT8237A SATA controller isn't supported before 2.6.18), I made it.

You can take it from the usual place; sarge-custom-1008.iso for i386.

  • Backported 2.6.18 kernel from unstable.
  • LVM/RAID will *NOT* work. Maybe I have to backport partman and dmraid to support them, but I haven't done yet.
  • Since kernel 2.6.17, Debian kernel team merged SMP support to a single kernel. So don't panic even -smp kernel isn't installed. ISO image has -486, -686, -686-bigmem, and -k7.
  • I haven't AHCI machine and I don't know PATA CD vs SATA HD problem still happen on 2.6.18. But I add a feature "atapi=true" boot option. When you append this option as the boot parameter, the installer will add the configuration to /etc/modprobe.conf.

hi,

try 2.6.18 later, but maybe somebody can help again with 0801 iso and dell 2950 ...

AMD64 version?

I tried for over a week now to create a debian installer with kernel 2.6.18 for AMD64, but failed miserably....
Would it be much work for you to provide one, too? Or could it be possible for me to use yours as template for an AMD64 version (unfortunately I do not think, I would manage this...)?

I not even tried to build a sarge installer. I tried with etch. I am happy with _any_ debian release, as long as I can access my disk (and it is an amd64 installer).

hupfdule,
OK, try http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/2.6.18/amd64/sarge-custom-1010.iso
(Although I haven't tested yet and have no time to fix anything in this week.)

Posted by kmuto at 2006/10/10 (Tue) 12:52:16

Unfortunately it does not work. It fails with a kernel panic:

No filesystem could mount root, tried: cramfs
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(1,0)

I you will find some time and know how to fix this, I would be glad.

965 chipset?

Does this installer support intel 965 chipset with ich8 sata ide controller?
Nothing works for me...

Amir,

AFAIK ich8 is supported since 2.6.18.

But that NIC may be not detected. I heard it from my friend.
Try http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/2.6.18/sarge-custom-1011.iso
Although directory name is 2.6.18, I use 2.6.19rc1 for this image.

hupfdule,
I see. I found two my mistakes. Try http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/2.6.18/amd64/sarge-custom-1012.iso
I checked it worked on 64 bit VMware.

Thank you. It works fine now. You are my hero. :-)

thank you

sarge-custom-1011.iso saved my life. I was about to downgrade my mainboard with intel 965 chipset to a mainboard with an older chipset. But hopefully this 2.6.19 kernel recognized all the devices.
It would be nice to see the RAID is working also.

Thanks so much :)

Thanks, but...

Thank you very much.
The 1011.iso detected my cdrom on the 965 chipset. It also detected the NIC and configured it correctly with DHCP. The problem is that it did not detect my WD SATA2 hard drive. I installed a Seagate PATA IDE drive - that was detected. Any ideas on how to detect the SATA2 drive?

Thanks,
Amir

Amir, try to boot Linux by Knoppix and put your information to HCL page (http://kmuto.jp/debian/hcl/), if you can. It helps us to know the detail of which SATA controller you have.

I downloaded Knoppix from knoppix.org, but it doesn't boot. Probably doesn't recognize the cd, since the kernel is pre 2.6.19rc1. Any ideas?

I tried your your 1012 iso for i386 and amd64. i tried to put a preseed file to automate the install and remade the iso. no matter what I do and where I put the preseed file, it keeps saying it's corrupt.

Also, can you write up a how-to on how you made this customized iso? You know, give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, but show him how to fish and he'll eat for life?

I'm trying to create a customized debian distro and the wikis and the documentations are all quite obtuse.

Amir, today I uploaded 1023 image for i386.
This image has lspci command.
